PARTICIPANT SIGNUP is for those who would like to use a compass and walk the courses (register with the number of adults and children in your party). VOLUNTEER registration is for those wanting to help with the event (you can do both; and try a course after volunteering). WEAR LONG PANTS AND CLOSED TOED SHOES - Part of the courses ARE THRU TALL VEGETATION! Let's Go Play Outdoors! Join the Open Lands &Trails team for some orienteering compass work at River's Edge Natural Area. Participants will be loaned a compass and given basic instruction on how to measure distances and find and follow a heading. Once you have a feel for your distance and pace length, trekkers will be given their first heading and clue for the first station. At each station, participants will solve a riddle or identify the item at that stop, indicating their success, and then be sent on a new heading. If you complete the course successfully, you may want to try the more advanced course without volunteer help over longer distances (new course with reference points). Check-in stations will be visible, but it is the order you collect your stamps that will show if you followed the course assigned. Small prizes and bragging rights to those who complete the courses successfully! Please bring your own compass if you have one. It will assure you won't have to wait for one to be returned before you can tackle the course. Come have some fun, enjoy the cooler evening temps and the falling darkness. No experience necessary. All ages welcome. Please register to receive notice of any changes in programming or weather updates.
