Guided Walk: Nature, Birding, History - Adult Programs

With the water level down, what will be revealed? Join this guided walk with staff member Michele Van Hare to experience what late season conditions present for viewing when the leaves drop, Boedecker recedes, and animals engage in their winter movement patterns. Participants will gain some history, visit the "beach" for hunting animal tracks and fossils, and identify some of your favorite native plants in their dormant state. Most exciting is the fun we can have exploring the Pierre shale for fossilized clams (and, if we are lucky, some other species of sea creatures). Please note: NO Collecting - so bring your camera. Dress for the weather - layers recommended. Wear sturdy shoes for the soft-surface trail. Parking - from West 1st St. and Rossum Dr., head north on Rossum, turn right on Scenic Dr. Parking is available on either side of Scenic or other side streets in the neighborhood. Do not block any driveways! Michele will meet the group at the corner of Rossum and Scenic to go down to West 1st St. by 10 AM. The walk will turn west on the Boedecker Trail to start, then loop to the lake shore, finishing east of the bridge and kiosk where the shale is good for fossils. Very little distance (~1/2 mile), some uneven ground.
