Natural History Hike - Bow to Butte - Oxbow Natural Area to Mariana Butte

Guided Walk: Nature, Birding, History - Adult Programs

Experience Colorado riparian (river) habitat and high desert habitat all in one morning hike! We'll explore along the trails from Oxbow East Natural Area, along the Hidden Hogback Trail, and up to Mariana Butte. We'll talk about the geology that forms the Devil's Backbone (which can be viewed from the Hidden Hogback Trail - photo op!) along with local plants and animals that call these varied habitats their home. Naturalist Robert P. will meet you at the Oxbow parking area on the east side of Rossum Drive, by the pedestrian bridge leading into Oxbow East. Dress for the weather in layers, and wear closed-toe shoes for the hike on natural surface, rocky and uneven trails. You may want a hiking pole for the small climbs (on the hogback trail is a stone curving stairway, and the last bit of a climb to the summit of the Butte (optional) is like a double flight of stairs made of rocks). Please bring your water, sunscreen, hat, etc. There's a great view from the trail and summit, you might want binoculars. Note: this walk has been rescheduled from July when it had to be canceled due to excessive heat in the area. October should be better!
