Native Seed Cleaning Project with WRV
12/14/2024
| 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Chilson Recreation Center (700 E 4th St)
Volunteer Opportunity - Mixed Ages
Join us for a fun morning of native seed cleaning (indoors) led by our partners at WRV (Wildlands Restoration Volunteers). Cleaning native seeds is a great way to give back, hang out with other community members and learn more about local botany in a relaxing setting. Volunteers will work on a variety of seeds collected in City of Loveland Open Lands by volunteers like you. Seeds have been drying in WRV headquarters in preparation for cleaning, cold stratification or other techniques that may be necessary for germination, depending on the species. Seed cleaning is the separation of seeds from seed pods and any other plant material, called chaff. We clean the native seed that volunteers collect out in the field so that it's easier to store, stays viable for longer, and is less likely to be contaminated by seeds from unwanted species or plant pathogens. Crew leaders or staff will instruct volunteers in a variety of manual methods, depending on the plant species we're working with. Seed cleaning is an essential activity for our native seed program and local restoration, as native seeds are hard to purchase commercially. By cleaning seeds, you help prepare them for propagation and/or direct seeding at Loveland natural areas, ensuring that more native plants are used in local restoration projects, supporting local wildlife, the environment and our communities. Registration is required. All registered volunteers will receive an email with additional details prior to the project. Seed cleaning is recommended for ages 8+, with an adult. Enter through the Recreation Center side of Chilson and meet in the Maple/Spruce Room on the Senior Center side. The Loveland Community Stewardship Initiative, funded by a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), is a new partnership with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) to enhance the city’s public lands through community engagement and volunteer stewardship. Other partners include Big Thompson Watershed Coalition, Boys & Girls Club of Larimer County, and Loveland Youth Gardeners, hosting volunteer events through 2024-2025 with an objective of cultivating a community of proactive outdoor stewards of Loveland Open Lands.
