Trail Host Training - On-site Session (Friday eve session also required)
06/03/2023
| 09:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park (1211 W US 34)
Training Opportunity - Adult Programs
BOTH FRIDAY EVENING AND SATURDAY MORNING SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED TO BECOME A TRAIL HOST This training is "Part 2" to certify as a volunteer Trail Host, the "eyes and ears" of Loveland Open Lands & Trails, gathering data, noting maintenance needs, and interacting with the public at city natural areas. No experience necessary, all training and materials are provided FREE. This on-site training will include detailed information, regulations and resources, making contact with the public, and reporting data collected while hosting. This field session will involve putting these new skills to use with other trainees and visitors at Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park. As a group we will caravan up to VSMP and include seeing the west side natural areas on our way up. A love of the outdoors and willingness to interact with visitors are a definite plus. Trail hosts may also enjoy fishing, hiking, bird watching, walking your dog (on a leash), looking for plants, even doing plein air painting while volunteering! Appropriate for those previously trained who would like a refresher (attend classroom or field session or both). Background check required to host. After training, actual hosting times and sites are at the discretion of the trail host.

I am originally from Virginia and have lived in Colorado for about 36 years. Prior, I lived in North Carolina and California where I was a forest firefighter with California Department of Forestry (CAL FIRE). Once in Colorado, I became employed as a Park Ranger with Larimer County Parks Department. I have always loved the outdoors and spent my younger years backcountry backpacking, canoeing and mountain climbing. I am now retired spend time taking our dog who is a Therapy Dog, on visits.

My wife and I recently moved to Colorado (from Pennsylvania) and have enjoyed working with local Community groups. In addition to Open Land and Trails have the pleasure of working with passionate folks at the Larimere County Food Bank, Loveland Habitat, Rialto Theater, Gardens on Spring Creek and the Lincoln Center. Enjoy biking, hiking, pickle ball and reading in my spare time.
