Volunteer Training: Canyon Ecosystem Exploration (on-site with City Council Chambers as back up)  - Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park (Big Thompson Canyon)

Tuesday, 02 September 2025 @ 09:00 AM to 02:00 PM

Training Opportunity  -  Adult Programs

Note: We'll start with the Nature Cabin and Animal Adaptations, then cover Energy Through the Biosphere with its activities, break for lunch, and do the three 30-minute stations. This free training is available for any adult to help present field trip programs to local school groups. Canyon Ecosystem Exploration programs are offered to 4th and 5th grade students on field trips to Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park. Program topics include: Life Zones, Canyon Plants, Animal Adaptations, Decomposition, and Energy Through the Biosphere (sun>plants>animal food chains). Volunteers receive an overview of the orientation, game, and small group learning stations. Volunteers may train for the 3 shorter stations or the 2 longer ones; all have materials and activities provided. Training is free, no previous knowledge necessary. New volunteers are paired with experienced volunteers until ready to go solo. This training opportunity starts with a 30 minute preview, then stay for training if it appeals to you, no obligation to commit to teaching at this time. See our website (www.lovgov.org/openlands) and click on Volunteer Opportunities and Environmental Education for more information. Only attend one training session for Canyon Ecosystems. An email will be sent to registered volunteers if weather adjustments are needed. The Loveland City Council Chambers is reserved as a backup location in case of rain. Bring a sack lunch and dress for cooler canyon temps. Adults 18+, background check required.
